FAQs

Who runs the rescue?
The rescue was started by Staffordshire Bull Terrier lovers and owners, who have plenty of “hands on” experience with the breed. The rescue is a voluntary organisation and relies totally on the generosity of others Staffie lovers who are prepared to give up some time to help with rescue and re-homing.

How is the rescue funded?
Staffies In Need is funded totally by donations from the general public and people who adopt dogs from us are asked to make a donation in order that we can continue with our work.

Why is the rescue a limited company?
The rescue was set up as a limited company (limited by guarantee) on the advice of a professional. This is not unusual, most non-profit organisations are also limited companies.

Why are you not a charity?
At the present time we do not feel that charitable status would benefit the rescue. Becoming a charity brings with it - committees, office bearers, AGM's etc which in our experience hampers rescue work.

Is anyone paid a salary or expenses?
Nobody is paid a salary but a small amount of our limited funds are occasionally used to meet excessive out of pocket expenses such as high mileage. Most of the volunteers will not accept expenses and operate on an out of pocket basis.

How are donations used?
Most of our limited and precious funds are spent on veterinary treatment including spaying and vaccinating. We do have an agreement with our local vets which helps us keep costs to a minimum. We don’t believe kennels to be in the best interests of the dogs, so are not spending money on these types of facilities. Anything else we try and beg, borrow or steal!! This rescue like many other small rescues really is run on a shoestring.

Do you have any accounts?
By law, any limited company must produce accounts and these have to be lodge with Companies House, where copies can be obtained by any member of the public. Our accounts will be produced by a qualified independent chartered certified accountant. The organisation has not been formed long enough to have had to submit any accounts yet.

Why do you spay/neuter dogs?
Because part of what we do is to promote responsible dog ownership, it would not be ethical for us to re-home a dog that has not been neutered or spayed. Part of the reason for the current crisis with this wonderful breed is the indiscriminate breeding by unscrupulous owners. Staffies in rescue centres are being euthanized simply because they are considered “surplus to requirements”.

What about vet treatment?
Dogs that come through the rescue are given appropriate veterinary treatment regardless of costs . All dogs that come into our care will also be vaccinated. This is something we expect new owners to keep up. We would also recommend pet insurance for those unforeseen times.

Do you microchip?
Yes. All dogs that come into our care are chipped and registered in the name of Staffies In Need. We recommend that new owners have these details changed, but at least this ensures if the dog is ever lost, the owners or Staffies In Need will be notified, should it be scanned by a vet.
